Stop saying “Good morning”: how to properly greet in Ukrainian at different times of the day
0
There are many ways to greet a person in the Ukrainian language. It all depends on the time of day, the situation, the level of communication, etc. However, even the usual “Good morning” has its own nuances, which many do not know about.
The founder of the Ukrainian Language Learning Center, Larisa Chemeris, spoke about it in detail on her Instagram page. She explained how to say standard phrases when greeting so as not to make mistakes.
The only three correct forms of greeting:
“Good morning!”
“Good afternoon !”
“Good evening!”
It is noted that many people often say “Good afternoon” or “Good evening”. However, this is a mistake. It is appropriate to use these phrases only in wishes, for example: “I wish you a good day” or “I wish you a good evening”.
When greeting in the morning, you should use the genitive case – “Good morning”. And in the afternoon and evening, you need to use the nominative case – “Good afternoon” and “Good evening”.
What other greetings can be used instead of the standard “hello”:
Good afternoon!
Greetings!
My greetings!
Glad to see you!
Glad to welcome you!
Hello!
