Strict upbringing can cause hyperactivity in a child

Harsh parenting methods created for behavioral problems in children of age, in fact they are born. Scientists from Great Britain came to this conclusion.

A long-term study by British scientists affected children and adolescents aged from a few months to 17 years. The researchers visited homes and collected data on what kind of behavior problems the children exhibited and how harshly they were raised. The authors of the study were interested in the so-called “chicken and egg” problem, that is, which comes first – behavior problems, which are followed by harsh upbringing, or vice versa. It was found that harsh parenting methods are associated with hyperactivity in a child aged 5 and emotional problems at the age of 7.

Problems with behavior in three-year-old children were caused by harsh parenting already at the age of 5, and hyperactivity that gave birth to emotional problems at the age of 5, was associated with harsh upbringing at the age of 7. This is a kind of bidirectionality of hyperactivity and strict upbringing. At the same time, elimination tactics in raising children were useful in preschool age, but led to adverse consequences already at the age of 5 to 7 years.

Unfortunately, the collected data were reported almost exclusively by mothers. In addition, the methods used to assess disciplinary education were not highly reliable and, therefore, could lead to data distortion. But it has been proven once again that such methods of upbringing as shouting or slapping a soft place can have harmful consequences for the mental health of children, however, children with behavioral problems create an additional burden on the psyche of parents, influencing the tactics of upbringing.
