Such a word does not exist: how to correctly call “kopchik” in Ukrainian

There are many words in the Ukrainian language that have their own unique meanings and origins. However, sometimes we can come across terms that are tracings from other languages, in particular from Russian. One such word is “coccyx”.

The word “coccyx” is used to refer to a bone located at the bottom of the spine. However, this term does not exist in the Ukrainian language. But the use of this word is a mixing of the Ukrainian and Russian languages, which, in turn, contributes to the strengthening of surzhik, a phenomenon when the elements of different languages are intertwined in speech without a clear boundary between them.

The correct term: “kuprik” < /p>

Host of the program “Correctly in Ukrainian”, Olga Bagniy, emphasized that the correct Ukrainian term is “kuprik”. This word accurately conveys the meaning of the bone, which is the last part of the spine, located near the buttocks. And we are wrong, because there is no word kopchyk in the Ukrainian language. But there is the word coccyx — it is a bone in the lower part of the spine. Remember: not the coccyx, but the coccyx,” she said.
So, instead of “coccyx” we should say “coccyx” – this is not only correct, but also important for the preservation of our language. Let's take care of the purity of the Ukrainian language together, avoiding calicos and sorghum. Each of us can contribute to this cause by using the right terms in our everyday life.
