Sugary drinks increase the risk of hair loss by 42%

Both men and women who enjoy sugary drinks may be at higher risk of hair loss.

A variety of causes, from poor diet to underlying medical conditions, can set the stage for hair loss. But some hair loss triggers can be addressed and modified. Recent research suggests that popular beverages may play a role in excessive hair loss.

Whether you opt for a glass of chilled lemonade with a meal or crack open a can of energy drink to beat your midday slump, everyone has a favorite sugary beverage.

While it's perfectly fine to have a glass of soda every now and then, you don't want it to become a daily occurrence.

A new study warns that drinking sugar-sweetened beverages could increase men's risk of hair loss by 42 percent. Sugary drinks can accelerate hair loss, from energy drinks to sodas, sports drinks and sugary tea.

Studying more than 1,000 men, the research team asked participants to consume between one and three liters of the beverage each week. Those who drank more than one sugary drink a day had a 42 percent higher risk of hair loss.

Men who admitted to suffering from hair loss also said they consumed an average of 12 sugary drinks a week.

“Women should also be careful about their energy drinks. The caffeine and sugar content in energy drinks can have the same effect on women as they do on men.”

One reason these drinks are bad for your hair is because of their high caffeine content. Caffeine can reduce blood flow to your hair follicles, narrowing the blood vessels in your scalp. This can cause your hair to become weak and fall out.
