Sweet drinks have a negative effect on children's minds

A new study showed that sugary drinks affect behavior and mathematical assessments of preschoolers.
During the study, scientists randomly divided 462 children into two groups. The first received drinks with sugar, and the second with an artificial sweetener.
Scientists found that drinking one sweet drink led to a “relaxing” effect among boys, but they became restless afterwards. There was no significant effect on the girls' behavior.
In addition, the consumption of one sweet drink apparently had a negative effect on the children's performance in mathematics. There was no gender dependence in this case.
“Our study is the first to present large-scale experimental data on the impact of sweet drinks on preschool children. The results clearly indicate the impact of sugary drinks on children's behavior and test results,” says corresponding author Fritz Schiltz, Ph.D. at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.
