Kidney cancer is a disease in which kidney cells become malignant (cancerous) and grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor. Almost all kidney cancers first appear in the lining of the tiny tubes (tubules) in the kidneys.
Most kidney cancers are detected before they have spread to distant organs. And cancer detected at an early stage is easier to successfully treat. However, these tumors can grow to quite large sizes before they are detected.
Doctors do not know the cause of kidney cancer. But certain factors seem to increase the risk of kidney cancer.
Here are some other risk factors for kidney cancer:
- Smoking. If you smoke cigarettes, the risk of infection is twice as high as for non-smokers. Cigar smoking may also increase the risk;
gender. Men are about twice as likely to get kidney cancer as women; - being overweight can cause hormonal changes that increase the risk of the disease;
- long-term use of certain painkillers;
- family history of kidney cancer. The risk is especially high in siblings
- exposure to certain chemicals such as asbestos, cadmium, benzene, organic solvents, or certain herbicides;
- high blood pressure, although on this point doctors argue.
< genetics. For example, family history of von Hippel-Lindau disease or hereditary papillary renal cell carcinoma;
