Taking high doses of fish oil supplements increases the risk of stroke

There are a number of major risk factors for stroke that can be avoided with a healthy diet: high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and being overweight. Indeed, there are a number of foods that can be included in your diet.

The Mayo Clinic says that fish oil supplements are generally considered safe when recommended. However, taking high doses of fish oil supplements may increase the risk of bleeding and possibly increase the risk of stroke.
Some, but not all, large randomized controlled trials examining the effects of supplements, the study said. of marine omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular outcomes, an increased risk of atrial fibrillation was reported.
It suggests that potential reasons for the mixed results may be dose-related.
< p>Fish oil supplements may inhibit platelet aggregation and may potentially increase the risk of bleeding. Fish oil supplementation reduces platelet aggregation in healthy subjects. This biochemical effect was not reflected in an increased risk of bleeding during or after surgery as assessed in randomized controlled trials. Therefore, this systematic review does not support the need to stop taking fish oil supplements before surgery or other invasive procedures.”
These data support the hypothesis that eating fish several times a week reduces the risk of thrombotic stroke, but not increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.
