Taking one dietary supplement doubles the risk of dying from cancer

The prevalence of cancer is increasing , despite the efforts of scientists to create more effective drugs to fight the disease. The best approach remains prevention, which involves a healthy lifestyle.

Many people take nutritional supplements to maintain their health. But excessive intake of some of them may be associated with an increased risk of death from cancer. It's about calcium. In a recent review of research, scientists warned of the dangers associated with calcium supplements.

“Ideally, calcium should be obtained through a varied and balanced diet. If this is unrealistic, taking a food supplement is appropriate, but in a small amount,” experts from the National Health Service of Great Britain note.

A meta-analysis conducted by researchers from Tufts University in Massachusetts showed that people can expose themselves risk, taking doses above 1000 mg per day. Researchers analyzed the medical records of more than 27,000 adults in the US.

After 12 years of follow-up, there were about 24 cancer-related deaths among calcium users and 12 among those who did not take the supplement . Thus, the risk of death from cancer was 53% higher for the first group.
