Experts are once again warning about the potential dangers of taking vitamins, this time in connection with an increased risk of several types of cancer.
Vitamin supplements are often touted as health boosters, but an analysis of 14 trials found that their intake can increase the risk of five types of cancer and death from them – oncologists from Cancer Research UK report. Experts refer to a review of five supplements.
The researchers who conducted it analyzed the results of tests using beta-carotene, vitamins A, C, E, as well as selenium supplements. It is believed that these substances have antioxidant properties, and therefore their intake can contribute to the prevention of cancer. But the scientists concluded that these supplements did not reduce the risk of cancer of the esophagus, stomach, intestines, pancreas or liver. Moreover, an increased risk of death from these diseases was found to be associated with their intake.
Doctors from Cancer Research UK, who reported this, added that two recent clinical studies also showed that vitamin supplements did not provide much benefit in terms of protection against cancer. Specifically, the trials found that selenium, vitamin E, or vitamin C supplements did not reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
Another analysis, which looked at data from 25 studies, concluded that beta-carotene supplements do not protect against lung cancer. Some researchers have even suggested that smokers who take these supplements may actually be more prone to developing lung cancer.
