Tea reduces the risk of dementia – which variety is best to drink?

Green tea may have neuroprotective properties.

Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, is a devastating condition that affects millions of people every year. As scientists make progress in developing reactive treatments, there is also progress in figuring out what might prevent the disease.

Green tea and blueberries may help protect the brain from damage caused by Alzheimer's disease.

The study identified two promising candidates, green tea catechins and resveratrol, with potent anti-plaque and functional neuroprotective properties combined with minimal neurotoxicity. Although previous reports suggested that these compounds have potential neuroprotective properties,

Catechins are a form of flavonoids, which are natural anti-inflammatory agents. It has previously been linked to heart disease, again through green tea.

The study results showed that the catechins in green tea appear to have some anti-plaque properties – Alzheimer’s disease occurs when plaques build up in the brain, slowly clogging the organ.
