According to the report, toxic levels of benzene were found in several types of dry shampoos.
Many dry shampoos may contain a toxic liquid compound that emits the smell of gasoline. Regular exposure to this chemical has been linked to the development of serious complications such as leukemia and nerve damage.
A staggering 70 percent of dry shampoos sold online may contain levels of the chemical found to be cause cancer The conclusions were obtained as a result of a series of laboratory tests conducted on a random sample of 148 sprays from 34 brands.
An independent laboratory has sent a citizen petition to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describing the discovery of benzene levels 10 times higher than 2 parts per million (PPM).
In its petition, the agency stressed the urgent need to tighten restrictions on benzene in commercially sold products.
A number of aerosol dry shampoos were voluntarily recalled last month due to the potential presence of the chemical. The colorless liquid chemical, found in cigarette smoke, gasoline, glues and adhesives, has consistently been shown to cause cancer in animal and human studies.
“Studies show that exposure to benzene can increase the risk of certain cancers by as much as 40 percent.”
Studies have consistently shown that there is no safe level of exposure to the chemical. Evidence suggests that exposure to benzene, even in small amounts, can significantly increase the risk of leukemia.
After entering the bloodstream, benzene causes chromosomal changes in bone marrow cells in laboratory studies.
