One of the most common neurodegenerative diseases, after Alzheimer's disease, is Parkinson's disease. This disease is caused by the progressive destruction and death of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra and other parts of the central nervous system. As a result, the patient has problems with coordination of movements. The disease can be accompanied by neurological and mental disorders.
Scientists continue to research to identify new risk factors for Parkinson's disease and to learn what can slow or reduce the likelihood of developing the disease. Specialists made a meta-analysis of the conducted studies and found that the popular hot drink can influence the development of the disease. It's about coffee.
It turned out that coffee and caffeine can reduce the risk of Parkinson's disease in healthy people. Also, coffee can slow down the progression of this disease in people with an already established diagnosis. Some of the studies reviewed were large-scale, long-term, population-based, while others specialized in observing people from certain categories. Their analysis found that healthy people who drank coffee regularly had a lower chance of developing Parkinson's than those who did not like the hot beverage.
The study also notes that risk factors for Parkinson's disease include adverse environment, lifestyle and genetic mutations. According to the NHS, the symptoms of Parkinson's disease usually develop gradually and are mild at first.
The three main symptoms of Parkinson's disease are:
- tremor – shaking which is usually begins in the hand and occurs more often when the limb is relaxed and at rest;
- hypokinesia – the movements of the human body become much slower than usual. This condition can lead to a characteristic slow, shuffling gait with very small steps;
- muscle stiffness (rigidity) – stiffness and tension in the muscles that can make movement and facial expressions difficult, and can be accompanied by painful muscle spasms.
