Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a term for a number of conditions caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver. Unlike alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD is not a direct cause of alcohol abuse. According to experts, the disease can be caused, for example, by obesity.

“Although NAFLD is mostly asymptomatic, patients may experience fatigue, decreased activity and deterioration of emotional health,” the study emphasizes.

Among other non-obvious symptoms, experts identified the following:

  • abdominal swelling (ascites);
  • dilation of blood vessels just under the surface of the skin;
  • redness of the palms;
  • yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
