Now it has become clear that tea can provide numerous health benefits. Researchers from the Tea Advisory Panel (TAP) group shared their findings.
According to the team's report, black tea, green tea, oolong and pu-er have a positive effect on the main organ of longevity – the intestine. Drinks contribute to the development of healthy microflora in it, which prevents the appearance of diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
“The secret lies in the large amount of polyphenols – natural compounds contained in tea”, – explained the lead author of the paper Dr. Kerry Ruxton . “Polyphenols shift the balance of our gut microbiota toward more favorable strains, including Lactobacillus, Faecalibacteria, and Bacteroides,” she added.
Previously, tea polyphenols have been shown to protect against cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, as well as a decrease in cognitive functions. Thus, regular drinking is associated with a lower risk of dementia, obesity, cancer, diabetes and heart problems, experts noted.
According to Ruxton, a 10-day study in which participants drank daily from four to five cups of green tea, showed increased levels of Bifiobacterium in the gut. In addition, it was found that green and black tea polyphenols increase the number of Bacteriodetes phyla and decrease the number of harmful Firmicutes.
