Aspirin can be part of some cold and flu remedies, so before using it it is worth learning about possible side effects. As experts explained, sometimes the medicine is not compatible with other drugs.

In particular, the National Health Center of Great Britain (NHS) warned against taking aspirin together with ibuprofen. “Do not take aspirin with ibuprofen … without consulting a doctor.”

As doctors explained, aspirin and ibuprofen belong to the same group of drugs known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Together, they increase the likelihood of unpleasant side effects, the easiest of which will be abdominal pain. According to experts, some NSAIDs can react unpredictably with other medications and increase the risk of unwanted effects.

Before taking ibuprofen, it is recommended to consult a doctor in the following cases:

* currently taking other NSAIDs;
* taking aspirin or warfarin in low doses;
* taking ciclosporin – medicine for arthritis or ulcerative colitis;
* taking diuretics.

Ibuprofen can also interact with the following substances:

* lithium-used for bipolar disorder and depression;
* methotrexate-used for rheumatoid arthritis;
* SSRIs such as citalopram and Prozac – antidepressants.

If you experience nausea, drowsiness, or upset stomach after taking any NSAID, you should call the hospital immediately. Such symptoms, as a rule, indicate an overdose of drugs. Severe symptoms of this condition include difficulty breathing, convulsions, and loss of consciousness.

Although aspirin is considered a safe drug, its use should be approached with caution if there is a history of:

* allergy to medicines in the past;
* stomach ulcer;
* recent stroke;
* high blood pressure;
* indigestion;
* asthma or lung disease;
* problems with blood clotting;
* gout.

It is allowed to take aspirin together with paracetamol or codeine. In case of doubt, it is necessary to talk to a doctor or carefully study the instructions for the drug, experts said.
