According to a recent study, sleeping less than five hours a night increases the risk of developing peripheral arterial disease (PAD) by 74%.
The arteries of the lower extremities are most often affected by PAD. In this condition, blood vessels narrow, disrupting normal blood flow, which leads to insufficient blood supply to the tissues of the lower extremities.
In the new study, the authors studied incidence rates among 650,000 adults. They then compared them with sleep duration. The results showed that not getting 7 or 9 hours of sleep increases the risk of developing PAD.
