Increased sensitivity of the teeth can be provoked by various factors – from a specific food to an incorrect bite. This was stated by a candidate of medical sciences, a dentist, orthodontist, periodontist.
The specialist listed non-obvious causes of the problem. According to the doctor, the sensitivity of the teeth appears if the dentin is “exposed” (it is under the enamel, the hard layer of the tooth that makes up its main part). As a result, various irritants enter through microtubules to the pulp, where blood vessels and nerve fibers are located. The nerve is excited, and a person feels pain. Short-term pain can be felt, for example, from hot and cold food, sour or sweet.
According to the doctor, increased tooth sensitivity can also occur due to recession or receding gums – in this case, the root of the tooth loses its protection. The main cause of recession is improper oral hygiene. “If a person does not thoroughly clean soft plaque, it becomes the cause of periodontitis or gum disease, which causes them to recede,” explained the dentist. Brushing too aggressively can also injure the gums and cause them to recede.
Tooth sensitivity can also appear due to wear of enamel, for example, functional load or erosion. If a person drinks carbonated water, acidic drinks, fresh juices, the enamel softens under their influence and becomes more prone to injuries. “If you immediately brush your teeth or eat solid food (crackers, nuts) after such drinks, it is easy to damage the enamel,” the doctor warned. After such drinks, as well as sour berries and fruits, she advised to wait half an hour, rinse your mouth and only then brush your teeth.
The cause of tooth sensitivity can also be functional loads, for example, an excessively deep bite or bruxism: they provoke abrasion enamel.
To prevent tooth sensitivity, the doctor advised to periodically use a paste that strengthens tooth enamel, as well as perform hygienic cleaning with remineralizing agents. Regarding the paste, it is better to consult a specialist. It is equally important to choose the right toothbrush with soft bristles, limit the use of acidic products and drinks.
