The specialist noted that the main pathogenetic cause of acne is a certain type of structure, as well as the activity of the sebaceous glands.
In addition to genetic predisposition, acne in adulthood in women may be associated with increased sensitivity of sebaceous glands to sex hormones – androgens. They provoke an increased secretion of sebum, as well as a change in its composition.
In addition, acne that first appeared in adulthood can be caused by a number of endocrine diseases. There are also factors that are commonly associated with acne breakouts. These are improper nutrition, smoking, disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, exposure to ultraviolet light, stress, improper care. They can indeed be triggers or aggravate the course of acne, but are not the root cause of its occurrence.
The doctor also reminded that the treatment of acne in adults is complicated by the fact that the disease has a tendency to relapse, even if the therapy is carried out correctly. Therefore, after the end of the main course, maintenance of a long-term remission is required by supportive treatment and reduction of exposure to trigger factors.
