No one should sleep without a pillow, but in the presence of some health problems, it should not be done categorically, – said the chiropractor.
Explaining in an interview who should not sleep without a pillow, the therapist noted that this should not be done by people with headaches. In addition, a pillow should definitely be used by people with spinal health disorders (especially with disorders in the cervical spine).
“Sleeping without a pillow is contraindicated for those who suffer from cervical osteochondrosis, cervical radiculopathy, herniated discs of the cervical spine, vascular diseases associated with the vertebral artery,” the doctor said.
The specialist added that it is more useful for people with these abnormalities to use a special orthopedic product rather than an ordinary pillow.
Also, the therapist expressed the opinion that sleeping with a pillow is necessary even for those who do not suffer from the listed pathologies. The chiropractor warned that its refusal has a bad effect on the condition of the brain.
“From the point of view of blood supply to the brain and spinal cord, it is completely wrong to sleep on a flat surface, as it creates uncomfortable conditions for the carotid artery, vertebral artery, the subclavian vein and other vascular-nerve plexuses,” explained the expert.
The doctor clarified that the cervical spine has a natural curvature, and it must “fill up” to provide neck support – the vessels passing through the neck do not feel excessive tension, are not exposed to the risk of spasms and fully supply the brain with blood. In order for the pillow to properly support the neck, its thickness (height) should be equal to the length of the shoulder. Those who believe that sleeping without a pillow is more useful, the Doctor warned: such a habit harms the cervical vertebrae, threatens to compress the nerve roots.
