A new study shows that controlling your weight can reduce your risk of developing bowel cancer and also help you avoid other serious diseases.

According to the Gut Research , obesity can increase the risk of bowel cancer by as much as 30 percent. And the type of foods you eat can also increase your risk of bowel cancer.

Dr Leslie Booth, director of research and patient and public engagement at Bowel Research UK, said:

“Our study found that 29 percent of the population do not read food labels, which if they did, would greatly help them avoid food groups. high in sugar, such as sugary fizzy drinks, or saturated fat, such as pies, cakes, pastries and cookies. Foods high in nitrates, such as processed or cured meats such as bacon, ham and salami, are also known to increase the risk of bowel cancer, so should be eaten in smaller quantities and no more than once a week.< /p>

What foods are associated with an increased risk of bowel cancer?

Red meat

Red meat includes lamb, beef , goat meat and pork. It is recommended to eat less than 500g of red meat each week, which is between three and four portions depending on the portion size.

Processed meat

Cured or cured meats, including bacon, ham, sausages and salami, contain preservatives that can be harmful to your health. You should avoid eating processed meat too often and instead eat it as an occasional treat.

Alcohol
