It is expected that by 2050, the number of people living with dementia will increase from 50 million to 152 million. Leading UK nutritionist and award-winning author Marilyn Glanville reveals 5 risk factors for Alzheimer's disease.
Unhealthy diet
It is extremely important that you eat well , as your mind and body are very closely connected.
Dr. Glanville said:
“We know from research that following a Mediterranean diet leads to less memory loss and/or attention problems. We also know that the Mediterranean diet is important for keeping your heart healthy, and it's just as important for your brain.”
Lack of sleep
Lack of sleep sleep increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease, so it's time to make sure you get enough sleep every night.
“Beta – amyloid protein is released during sleep when the cerebrospinal fluid flushes toxins from the body. You should try to get six to eight hours of sleep a night.”
Disadvantage of exercise
Physical activity is very important for healthy brain function as well as physical health.
“Researchers found that those who were most active had a 30 percent lower risk of cognitive decline, and the amount of exercise was more important , than their intensity. When walking, distance was more important than pace.”
Drugs
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are drugs that help reduce acid reflux, and now they are thought to increase the risk of dementia by 44 percent because they increase beta-amyloid levels in the brain.
Vitamin D deficiency
Only in recent years doctors and scientists have realized how important this nutrient is to overall health, especially brain health.
“Studies have shown that if you are moderately deficient in vitamin D, your risk of Alzheimer's disease increases by 69 percent, and for those who suffer from its serious deficiency, the risk increases to 122 percent.”
