Doctor Charlotte Norton claims that lifestyle changes, including dietary considerations may reduce adverse effects. If cholesterol levels continue to rise, people eventually end up with atherosclerosis.
“Atherosclerosis is a potentially dangerous condition in which the arteries become clogged with fatty substances called plaque or atheroma,” explains Dr. Norton. . “When atherosclerosis occurs due to the hardening of cholesterol along the walls of the arteries, blood flow is reduced due to the narrowing of the passages. In fact, it can make arteries and veins less flexible, which can also affect blood flow.”
Here are six “high cholesterol foods to avoid:
- Whole milk
- Butter
- Red meat
- Processed meat
- Fried food
- Cheese< /li>
Fatty, processed meats and cheese are high in saturated fat, which is known to raise cholesterol.
“Saturated fat should be avoided in general,” – emphasizes Dr. Norton. “That said, foods high in unsaturated fats, such as salmon, almonds, avocados, and seeds, are actually known to have the opposite effect of lowering cholesterol.”
In addition to controlling fat intake, it's important to increase fiber intake, the doctor advises. Examples of foods rich in fiber include beans, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
