Many men aged 40 to 70 face the problem of erectile dysfunction. The cause, according to doctor Martin Skura, may be diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure.
The specialist explained that it's all about disorders in the functioning of blood vessels. At the time of arousal, nitric oxide is released. It relaxes the muscles, but at the same time controls the blood vessels, thereby ensuring an erection.
“Smoking, diabetes and a deficiency of the male hormone testosterone that occurs with age disrupt this process,” the doctor noted.
Skur added that diabetes causes an increase in cholesterol levels, which clogs blood vessels and reduces blood circulation. A similar effect occurs with high blood pressure. That is why erectile dysfunction is considered a marker of coronary heart disease.
