A growing body of research highlights the harm that excessive alcohol consumption can have on our sleep, suggesting that it may be the cause of various disturbances.
According to Martin Preston, founder and CEO of Delamere, alcohol consumption can be the cause of two sleep states that lead to “chronic” problems.
According to Preston, evidence of alcohol consumption can be misleading and many people turn to it to induce sleep.
< p>“But drinking too much alcohol can affect the quality of your sleep and cause negative effects, from headaches and dehydration to an increased need to urinate and overheating.”

The sleep cycle can be divided into four phases, the last of which is rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The cycle will repeat several times throughout the night, with each successive REM stage increasing the length and depth of sleep.
However, when alcohol enters the body, it causes significant disruptions in each cycle, mainly disrupting REM sleep. Since REM is the stage in which vivid dreams and nightmares occur, alcohol tends to induce both good and bad dreams.
“When alcohol passes through your body, you are more prone to nightmares and vivid dreams. As blood alcohol levels drop, sleep is shorter and you experience more dream memories and REM sleep.”
Excessive alcohol consumption can also be an important factor in sleep apnea.
“Drinking alcohol can cause irregular breathing and is formally known as sleep apnea, a disorder characterized by abnormal breathing and shortness of breath during sleep.”
