The doctor named the foods that can increase the risk of colon cancer

Dr Ellie Cannon has named a popular food loved by thousands of Britons that can increase the risk of bowel cancer. The TV doctor also gave you advice on what you should eat to keep your gut healthy.

Bowel cancer describes cancer that starts in the large intestine. Depending on the location, it is also called rectal or colon cancer. However, certain foods can increase your risk.

Dr. Ellie explained how switching to a “part-time” vegetarian diet can benefit your gut and reduce your risk of cancer. She warned that red and processed meats can increase your risk of bowel cancer.

“If you cut back on meat, you’re cutting back on saturated fat first,” she explained.

Saturated fat can raise your “bad” LDL cholesterol, which in turn increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. But that’s not the only benefit of cutting out meat that the doctor shared.

“People who eat a lot of red and processed meats are more likely to develop bowel disease, especially bowel cancer. But to get to that level, you have to be really extreme.”

Dr. Alley is not the only expert to link red and processed meats to serious health problems. A number of studies have shown that eating these foods can increase the risk of cancer.

Processed meat describes meat that has been altered to preserve or add flavor, from pickling to smoking. Sausages, bacon and ham fall into this category.

Dr. Alley said:

“We know that replacing some of these red meat options with plant-based alternatives is good for our gut health.”
