LDL-bad cholesterol; this type blocks your arteries and increases your risk of heart disease. HDL-good cholesterol; it helps get rid of bad cholesterol by delivering it to the liver. So you need high levels of HDL and low levels of LDL.
Dr Catherine Basford from Asda has named the most effective cholesterol-lowering foods. It's about the humble pumpkin.
According to Dr. Catherine Basford, “Pumpkin seeds contain a compound called phytosterol, which is very effective at lowering LDL cholesterol. Phytosterols reduce the level of cholesterol by blocking the absorption of harmful cholesterol with food.”
Besides pumpkin seeds, berries should also be added to the diet. They contain a chemical known as polyphenols.
According to Dr. Basford, they “help reduce the risk of stroke, improve insulin resistance and systemic inflammation, and lower blood pressure.”
“If you're not a berry lover, you can also get polyphenols from tea, cocoa, and fruits and vegetables.”
Three more foods you should include in your diet:
- Tea
- Cocoa
- Vegetables
Exercise is critical to lowering cholesterol. Just 30 minutes of moderate or vigorous exercise a week can lower your cholesterol, stroke risk, and improve your fitness.
