The doctor revealed the advantages and disadvantages of laser correction

Currently, laser vision correction is gaining more and more popularity as a method of restoring eye functions. With the help of such an operation, you can get rid of nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. However, like any procedure, it has its advantages and disadvantages, said Regina Shaidullina, an ophthalmologist at the Institute of Eye Diseases of the FGBNU.

First of all, the doctor emphasized that laser correction is not a treatment. With the help of surgery, you cannot get rid of eye diseases or eliminate their cause. According to Shaidullina, this procedure is the same method of myopia correction as glasses or contact lenses, “Mir24” reports. “That is, it does not cure myopia and does not eliminate its cause. There are no certain restrictions on the degree of myopia in the indications for laser vision correction,” she explained.

However, the doctor noted that there are strict indications for this operation. In particular, the patient must be over 18 years old, and the negative must be stable for at least a year.

Among the contraindications, the most common are dystrophic and degenerative diseases of the cornea, retinal detachment, severe dry eye syndrome, infectious diseases and progressive glaucoma. . In addition, laser correction will not be performed on patients with a thin cornea, as well as on pregnant and lactating women.

At the same time, Shaidullina advised to do the correction on both eyes at once, not one at a time. The operation itself is performed on the cornea of the eye. The effect of the laser on it is minimal and the best result can be achieved if correction is made between the ages of 18 and 45. In this case, we are often talking about one hundred percent restoration of vision, the doctor added.
