A new study by scientists has confirmed that people who drink alcohol are at a higher risk of suffering from a stroke.
A group of scientific experts representing the University of Galway (also known as the National University of Ireland in Galway) calculated how much drinking threatens a person with the development of a cerebral stroke.
A stroke is the result of an acute disruption of the blood supply to the brain, divided into ischemic (caused by blockage of a cerebral artery due to atherosclerotic plaque or thrombus) and hemorrhagic (a rupture of a vessel with hemorrhage into the brain occurs).
The results obtained by specialists were published by the journal Neurology. The authors of the investigation stated that on average, the risk of stroke in those who drink is higher than in non-drinkers by 14 percent.
The specialists also determined the dose of alcohol capable of causing a stroke.
“Five servings of alcohol drunk during the day increase the risk of ischemic stroke by 29%, and hemorrhagic stroke by 76%, if such drinking is practiced once a month,” the experts stated.
What are five servings of alcohol? Doctors clarified that this amount is equal to five glasses of strong alcohol, half a bottle of wine, two and a half liters of beer.
