The duration of sleep during the day can signal the onset of dementia

Duration of daytime sleep can signal one of the most common types of dementia.

Dementia is a general term for symptoms caused by the progressive deterioration of the brain, in which neurons die. Among its various types, dementia with Lewy bodies is one of the most common.

This disease over time increasingly reduces the quality of thinking, reasoning and the ability to independently cope with routine functions due to abnormal microscopic deposits that damage brain cells.< /p>

What can signal the onset of dementia? According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NDS), the symptoms of dementia with Lewy calves can vary from person to person, both in nature and degree of severity.

The duration of sleep during the day can signal the onset of the disease: one of the characteristic signs is excessive daytime sleepiness. When characterizing it, experts defined the disorder as “sleeping for two or more hours during the day”.

Other sleep disorders may include the following deviations.

  • Behavior disorder in the REM sleep phase: these can be vivid dreams, talking in your sleep, sudden movements or falling out of bed.
  • Insomnia: difficulty falling asleep or waking up too early.
  • Restless legs syndrome: a person feels during rest an irresistible urge to move the legs.
