The endocrinologist explained the consequences of a lack of iodine in the body.
Everyone knows that iodine is needed primarily for the health of the thyroid gland. In fact, it is not only the thyroid that needs it. And iodine deficiency can lead to very deplorable consequences.
Thyroid hormones are responsible for regulating many important biochemical reactions in the body, for metabolism. Iodine deficiency leads to goiter of the thyroid gland, mental retardation, reduced sexual development, growth retardation, and reduced IQ. A connection between insufficient iodine intake and benign breast diseases has also been found,” says the expert.
Is it possible to get enough iodine from food? It is possible, and often this is enough. But there are periods when additional consumption of iodine is needed. These are periods of pregnancy and breastfeeding.
The most iodine is found in fish, seaweed, shrimp, dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese), and iodized salt. Iodine can also be obtained from food supplements, usually in the form of potassium iodide or sodium iodide.
Many vitamin and mineral complexes also contain iodine. A good effect is given by dietary supplements of kelp iodine (algae).
The expert notes that people who do not use iodized salt are in the risk group. Adding iodine to salt is the most popular strategy for combating iodine deficiency.
