You can increase your life expectancy by exercising regularly. For example, the UK's National Health Service (NHS) describes exercise as “the miracle drug we've all been waiting for”.
You don't need to run a marathon every day to reap the benefits. A simple daily walk can add years to your life.
But according to scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, taking more steps in short periods of time can do you even more good.
< p>These benefits tend to disappear after a daily walk of about 4,500 steps in short bursts. But compared to no daily steps, each added 1,000 steps reduces the risk of death by about 28%.
“Older adults face many barriers to participating in structured exercise programs,” said the study's lead author. Christopher C. Moore. – “Some may find daily walking behavior more convenient and enjoyable, such as parking a little further from their destination or doing extra work around the house or garden.”
The more exercise you do, the bigger the reward. In particular, any exercise that gets your heart rate up and makes you feel warmer will be helpful.
