The population of “blue zones” greatly contributed to the study of longevity by highlighting which foods are most widely consumed by long-lived people.
According to National Geographic researcher Dan Buettner, of the 10 foods recommended for longevity, half may belong to the legume family, reports Express . Lentils, soybeans, peanuts, chickpeas, and black beans can be among the staple foods.
Buettner made this discovery after going in search of key lifestyle secrets to longevity. His research covers the entire area of the blue zone, home to one of the largest populations of longevity.
Büttner attributed longevity effects to beans during his time in Sardinia, California and Costa Rica. Long-term residents of Sardinia combined beans and chickpeas with tomatoes, milk thistle tea and wine, while Californians preferred to combine beans with salmon and avocado.
These results were confirmed by a study of people over 70 years old, which showed that for every two tablespoons of beans eaten, people reduced their risk of death by 8%.
Other studies have shown that the skins of black beans contain 40 times more antioxidants than their white counterparts. Many of these dietary compounds reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications, such as heart attack.
