The habit of going to the toilet “just in case” is harmful to your health

A “preventive” visit to the toilet before leaving the house is a common habit – experts advise getting rid of it.

The habit of going to the toilet “just in case” is harmful to health – it is the pelvic floor and bladder that suffer from it. This was warned about in an interview by physiotherapist Tiffany Sequeira, who also urged not to use the toilet when there is no real physiological need. Otherwise, this practice can cause serious dysfunction in the work of the urinary system, the doctor emphasized.

The specialist explained to the Mirror: when a person goes to the toilet without an immediate need to urinate, he empties a bladder that is not yet full. If this is done regularly, there may be confusion in the signals between the brain and the bladder.

The brain will begin to perceive the need to empty an unfilled bladder as the norm – as a result, the person will feel a strong urge even with small amounts of urine. In turn, constant urination with small amounts of urine in the bladder can contribute to the fact that it begins to weaken and decrease, which can cause urinary incontinence.

“If you want to maintain a healthy bladder, use the toilet only when you really need to urinate. By doing this “just in case,” you can do a disservice to your bladder, which will learn to empty itself before it fills properly,” the physiotherapist stated.
