Walnuts are one of the most nutritious foods in the world , which scientists associate with various health benefits.
In particular, nuts are credited with strengthening the cardiovascular system, supporting immunity, and reducing the risk of developing certain types of cancer.
It turns out that that all these therapeutic effects are related to the impact of nuts on the gut microbiome. Eating walnuts has been proven to not only provide the body with vital fiber, but also to lower the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the body.
Researchers found that walnuts increase the levels of three strains of bacteria, namely Faecalibacterium, Roseburia and Clostridium.
These microbes are of interest primarily because they have the ability to produce butyrate, a compound associated with optimal gut health.
“We discovered , that eating walnuts increases the number of microbes that produce butyrate, a beneficial metabolite for colon health. Thus, the interaction of walnuts with the microbiome causes positive health effects.”
Butyrate has the ability to reduce inflammation and increase insulin sensitivity.
In addition, experts found that consumption of walnuts led to a decrease in secondary bile acids, which were associated with higher rates of colorectal cancer and cell damage in the gastrointestinal tract.
