The key to longevity: scientists have named the optimal duration of training

Using the benefits of regular exercise can be much easier than many people think. A study published in the journal Circulation of the American Heart Association showed that short exercises lasting as little as 12 minutes can add several years to life and reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Scientists from the Massachusetts Hospital of Harvard analyzed the levels of hundreds of different metabolites in 411 middle-aged men and women before and after physical activity.

They found that DMGV, a biomarker associated with increased risk of diabetes and fatty liver disease, decreased by 18% after exercise.

In addition, glutamate levels, which are linked to heart disease, diabetes and early death, dropped by 29%. Thus, 12 minutes of activity can help prevent fatal diseases and prolong life.

“We are beginning to better understand the molecular basis of how exercise affects the body and use this knowledge to understand the metabolic architecture associated with patterns of response to exercise,” explained one of the authors of the study, Ravi Shah.

“This approach could potentially target people who suffer from high blood pressure and have other metabolic risk factors and allow them to be directed to more a healthy trajectory of life,” he added.
