The duration of life depends on nutrition, the way life, the presence of chronic diseases. However, longevity can also be influenced by various habits and activities, scientists believe.
According to the study, social interaction with people can significantly increase the chances of a long life. To determine to what extent it affects the risk of mortality, experts conducted a meta-analytic review.
Scientists were based on 148 studies involving almost 309,000 people. They were observed for about 7.5 years. It found that the probability of survival increases by 50% for participants with stronger social relationships. This result was relevant for people regardless of gender, age, baseline health status.
“The magnitude of this effect is comparable to quitting smoking and exceeds many well-known risk factors for mortality (for example, obesity, lack of physical activity )”, the scientists noted.
Experts also believe that, in general, social isolation is harmful to a person. However, further research is needed to determine exactly how social relationships can be used to reduce mortality risk.
