Austrian Vienna took first place again, and Kyiv was among the worst cities because of the war.
European cities continue to dominate the top lines of the rating. Copenhagen and Zurich ranked second and third respectively. However, even these successful cities have their challenges. For example, Sydney, Melbourne and Vancouver, although still in the top ten, lost positions due to housing problems.
Unfortunately, Kyiv, which returned to the index after the Russian invasion, ended up in 165th place out of 173 cities, gaining only 44.5 points. Next to Kyiv in the rating are Caracas (44.9 points) and Port Moresby (44.1 points), which also face serious security and infrastructure problems.
Damascus (Syria) is in the last place of the rating. , scoring only 30.7 points. The prolonged armed conflict led to the destruction of infrastructure, deterioration of medical care and a sharp drop in the standard of living. Also at the bottom of the rating are Tripoli (Libya) and Algiers (Algeria) with 40.1 and 42.0 points, respectively. These cities also suffer from political instability and security issues.
The Global Liveability Index in 2024 shows some improvements in living conditions in the world, despite geopolitical conflicts and economic crises. Advances in healthcare and education in developing countries have contributed to this positive trend. However, housing problems, instability and wars continue to create significant challenges for many cities around the world.
