After 30 years, changes occur in the body that slow down metabolism and complicate the process of losing weight, says nutritionist Amy Shapiro.
According to Shapiro, after 30 years, muscle mass decreases by three to eight percent every ten years. She explained that since muscle burns calories efficiently, the less it is in the body, the harder it is to lose weight. In addition, Shapiro continued, the loss of muscle mass slows down the metabolism and extra pounds appear even after eating diet foods.
The nutritionist called another reason for the difficulties with losing weight hormonal changes that occur after 40-50 years. “During menopause, women experience a drop in estrogen levels, which is associated with an increase in abdominal fat. In men, testosterone levels decrease, which reduces its regulatory effect on fat distribution, muscle mass and strength,” Shapiro explained.
The specialist added that poor sleep often interferes with the fight against excess weight. She emphasized that weight loss and a night's rest are not directly related, but constant lack of sleep increases the level of ghrelin, which increases appetite.
