The main factor that warns about the risk of developing stomach cancer
One of the main risk factors for stomach cancer is the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, British doctors reported.
Scientists have identified a mechanism by which a bacterium can cause stomach cancer. They studied the process of destruction of the protective membrane of an organ infected with bacteria.
The protective membrane is a dense layer formed by epithelial cells that protect the stomach from the effects of acid contained in gastric juice. H. pylori produces an enzyme that it uses as a kind of tool to penetrate through the barrier layer. It corrodes the layer of epithelial cells.
As a result, Helicobacter pylori reaches deep, normally inaccessible tissue layers, and causes serious damage. This is the first step to start the development of stomach cancer.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, caused by the pathological throwing of stomach contents into the esophagus, also increases the risk of oncology.
In addition, obesity can contribute to the development of cancer, smoking, chronic inflammation. Genetic predisposition also plays a big role.
Stomach cancer ranks third in the world in terms of mortality and fifth in prevalence. As previously reported, its development can be triggered by polyps – growths formed on the mucous membrane of the intestinal wall.
What factors can indicate the development of cancer? These are constant belching, heartburn, drowsiness, sleep disorder, nausea, flatulence, loss of appetite. At the very beginning, stomach cancer can be completely asymptomatic.
