Grapes have been cultivated for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations revered these berries for their beneficial properties, which were used in winemaking. The most popular types of grapes are green, red, black and pink. Moreover, berries are available both with and without seeds.
Grapes are considered extremely beneficial for health due to their high content of nutrients and antioxidants. Its main advantages include several effects.
Prevents chronic diseases
Antioxidants are compounds that help repair cell damage caused by free radicals. The latter, in turn, are molecules that provoke oxidative stress in the body. The problem is that oxidative stress is linked to several chronic diseases, including diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
Grapes are rich in a number of powerful antioxidant compounds. According to scientists, their highest concentration is found in the skin and seeds. At the same time, most of these substances were found in red grapes. They are stored in it even after fermentation. That is why red wine in small quantities is considered good for health.
Protects against some types of cancer
One of the antioxidants is resveratrol. Numerous studies have shown that it protects against heart disease, lowers blood sugar, and protects against cancer.
Scientists have proven that it reduces inflammation, blocking the growth and spread of malignant cells in the body. In addition, grapes contain quercetin, anthocyanins and catechins – all of which have shown positive effects against cancer tumors. In particular, the substances were able to slow down the spread of colon and breast cancer.
Lowers blood pressure
150 grams of grapes contain 288 mg of potassium, which is 6% from the daily rate of consumption. The mineral is necessary to maintain a normal level of blood pressure. A study of more than 12,000 adults found that people who consumed the right amount of potassium had a lower risk of dying from heart disease.
May lower cholesterol levels
Grapes can protect the body from high cholesterol by reducing the absorption of this substance. According to scientists, eating three glasses (500 grams) of red grapes a day reduces the amount of total and “bad” cholesterol in the blood for eight weeks. At the same time, white grapes did not have such an effect.
