The main product that hypertensive patients cannot

The ingredient is often hidden in the products you buy, making it difficult to determine how much you are eating.

Various risk factors from being overweight to smoking can lay the groundwork for high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. As with many other conditions, your diet also plays a huge role. What’s worse, one of the most common causes of high blood pressure is a popular ingredient that’s bound to be in your kitchen cupboard.

Whether you sprinkle it on potatoes or add it to homemade food to enhance its flavor, salt is the most popular seasoning.

Unlike spices and herbs, people don’t have a dislike for salt, making the seasoning an indispensable ingredient. While salt can preserve processed foods and add flavor to fresh ingredients, your blood pressure isn’t a big fan.

Consuming too much salt is the “most serious cause” of high blood pressure.

The reason the spicy flavoring raises blood pressure is because it causes water retention. Salt causes your body to hold onto water. If you eat too much, the extra water in your blood means extra pressure on your blood vessel walls, raising your blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, too much salt will raise it even more, and it could mean that any blood pressure medication you take isn't working as well as it should.

Adults should consume less than six grams of salt a day. But don't lock the salt shaker away in the kitchen cupboard just yet.

“Most of the salt we eat is hidden in the foods we buy ready-made, such as bread, biscuits, cereals, sauces and condiments, as well as ready meals and takeaways.”
