Separately, scientists also made another finding when they studied brain tumors. It turns out that the insulin receptor plays a critical role in maintaining a population of specialized brain cancer cells known as glioblastoma stem cells.
When scientists inactivated the insulin receptor in glioblastoma stem cells, they found that the growth of these tumor cells was inhibited. It is critical for science to understand the molecular mechanisms critical to the growth and maintenance of brain stem cells under normal and abnormal conditions.
