Taras Shevchenko Boulevard was laid in the early 1840s and then had a completely different appearance. Thanks to amateur photographers, we can see what this, without a doubt, one of the most famous streets of Kyiv was like in the 1930s and 1950s.
The archival photos and history were published on his Telegram channel by the capital's tour guide Kyrylo Stepanets This area was first mentioned in 1834 as the Boulevard Highway.
“Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, laid in the early 1840s, used to have a completely different appearance. It used to be called Bibikov Boulevard, in honor of Kyiv military governor DG Bibikov… The photo shows Shevchenko Boulevard in the 1930s and 1950s,” Stepanets said.
According to the tour guide, the boulevard got its modern name more than a hundred years ago – in 1919 – in honor of the outstanding Ukrainian, poet and artist Taras Shevchenko.
