The diagnosis of increased intracranial pressure can be made incorrectly – first of all, in order to correctly determine the pathology, you need to be examined by an ophthalmologist, explained the neurologist in the network blog.

The neurologist explained how to correctly determine increased intracranial pressure

According to the doctor, increased intracranial pressure “has nothing to do” with the descriptions of hydrocephalus on MRI, which are sometimes evaluated as its indicator symptom. The neurologist is convinced: it is not a CT scan, but a trip to an ophthalmologist that helps to correctly identify the anomaly.

“The first question I ask a patient who has received a diagnosis of ICT is whether he has been consulted by an ophthalmologist,” the doctor said.

The specialist explained that in the case of increased pressure, the brain, located in the closed space of the cranium, begins to literally “squeeze out” – first of all, in the region of the orbit. At the same time, the optic nerve is compressed and deformed.

“Swelling of the optic nerve discs is the most reliable way to suspect an increase in intracranial pressure,” the neurologist shared.

According to the results of a consultation with an ophthalmologist a further detailed examination is already being carried out.

The doctor added that persistent headaches of a throbbing nature are often associated with the development of ICH, which is not always correct. The diagnosis of “increased intracranial pressure” does exist, but in fact this disorder is rare, the expert emphasized.
