The nutritionist named 4 products with more salt than in a bag of chips

The main cause of high salt content is processed foods such as ready meals, but there are many more foods that are surprisingly high in salt.

Nutritionist Sheena Bhageerutty says some foods have a 'healthy aura' me” to look like a healthy product, but they're actually high in salt.

Here are 4 everyday foods that are high in hidden salt.

Hot Chocolate

“Many people may not realize that a serving of hot chocolate can contain the same amount of salt as a packet of crisps.”

In fact, research by Action on Salt found that one hot chocolate on the high street contained more salt than sea water.

Bread

“Bread is actually one of the biggest sources of salt in our diet, especially if you eat bread for several meals, such as toast for breakfast and then a bagel for lunch.”

Canned soup

One chicken soup from the popular brand contained 1.5 grams of salt per serving—and that's before you season your bowl with salt and pepper at home.

Frozen Pizza

Ready-to-eat meals are one of the main culprits of high salt levels, while frozen pizza may contain less salt than take-out pizza, but still quite a lot. One frozen pizza contains an average of 3 grams of salt: half of the maximum recommended daily allowance.

There is very strong evidence that excessive salt consumption is associated with increased blood pressure.
