Proper nutrition is an important factor in a long and healthy life. Many people follow a diet that is harmful to their health as a whole.
In the study, participants were considered who either followed a “Western” diet with a high content of red meat, processed foods, refined grains and sugar, or a healthier one, which mainly consisted of legumes, vegetables, fruits, poultry, fish and whole grain products.
After 18 years of observation, scientists found that those who followed the second diet, the overall risk of death was reduced by 17%, and the risk of death from cardiovascular disease was reduced by 28%.
The study also found that those following a “Western” diet had a 21% increase in overall mortality, and also by 22% – mortality from cardiovascular diseases.
Experts also study the world's “blue zones”, which are the areas with the largest number of long-lived people, and found many similarities in nutrition and lifestyle, one of which – consumption of legumes. According to experts, beans are the “cornerstone of a diet for longevity.”
Getting enough fiber (found in legumes) has been linked to a longer, healthier life. These foods also contain a powerful antioxidant called polyphenol, which researchers have found may also aid in healthy aging.
According to the review, polyphenol is found in many different types of beans (black, kidney, red, pegom), and it has been proven that it has anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity and cardiotonic effects.
