Many shower daily. It not only helps to wash away dirt and dead cells from the skin, but also to relax. However, experts believe that taking a shower too often and for a long time is harmful to health.
In an interview, cosmetologist Dr. Rekha Taylor said that showering every day has a negative effect on the condition of the skin. According to her, water removes natural oils and washes away from the skin natural bacteria and microorganisms that support the immune system.
This point of view is shared by other experts. They note that the skin suffers especially when the shower is hot. In addition to weakening the immune system, removing natural bacteria from the skin can cause the following problems:
- dryness, irritation and itching;
- skin infections and allergic reactions (dry and cracked skin is easier bacteria and allergens penetrate).
In this regard, experts gave general advice on taking a shower – the shorter, the better. At the same time, some experts believe that five minutes is enough for a shower. As for the frequency of showering, a few times a week will be enough, but not every day.
Dr. Taylor added that not showering every day improves the quality and condition of the skin. The reason also lies in the oils – if you don't wash them off under a frequent shower, they take part in the skin regeneration process, helping to retain moisture better.
Moreover, the natural protection of the skin can also be violated by cosmetic products for the shower. The specialist explained that the skin consists of a microbiome, a term used to describe all organisms living on the skin. This includes bacteria, fungi, viruses. “If this balance of microorganisms is altered by shower gel and excessive washing, the skin can lose its natural protective mechanisms,” Taylor said.
She added that prolonged and daily showering can exacerbate symptoms in people with skin infections. diseases such as psoriasis or eczema.
