The somnologist explained how a late dinner affects the quality of sleep

Somnologist , warned that a late dinner and overeating at night can interfere with falling asleep and negatively affect the quality of sleep in general. According to the doctor, this happens because the body has to “do the day's work” at night.

The specialist noted that the brain and the whole body have many tasks at night. If the body also has to digest food after a late dinner, this will reduce the restorative effect of sleep.

In addition, overeating in the evening can make it difficult to fall asleep, the doctor added. “When the body begins to digest food, our internal temperature rises – this is the opposite of what is needed to fall asleep,” explained the somnologist.

According to her, in order for a person to fall asleep, it is necessary for the internal temperature of the body to decreased by approximately 0.2°C. That is, a hearty dinner at night can lead to difficulties falling asleep, and to less quality sleep, the expert concluded.
