The number of teachers who use exclusively the Ukrainian language during lessons and during breaks has decreased, according to the responses of schoolchildren. Also, less than 40% of students communicate exclusively in Ukrainian outside of school.
This is reported by the survey of the State Education Quality Service of Ukraine.
After the start of the full-scale war, there was an increase in the use of the Ukrainian language in the educational process, but this academic year the situation has changed. This is due to a decrease in the share of high school students (by 17%), parents (by 11%) and teachers (by 8%) who consider Ukrainian their mother tongue.
What language do teachers communicate in?
According to students, 78% of teachers communicate only in Ukrainian during lessons, compared to 83% last year. During breaks, 69% of teachers communicate in Ukrainian, while last year this figure was 74%.
5% of students noted that their teachers use both Ukrainian and Russian to the same extent.
Parents indicated that in 93% of the schools where their children study, the educational process is conducted exclusively in the Ukrainian language.
The absolute majority of teachers claim that they use only the state language during education. 88% of teachers communicate with colleagues in Ukrainian, and 9% mainly in Ukrainian.
Language of students
Among students, the number of those who communicate exclusively with each other during lessons and breaks decreased by 8% Ukrainian 41% of students communicate in Ukrainian during breaks, and half – during lessons.
A third of high school students said that during breaks they speak both Ukrainian and Russian, or mostly Russian. Last year, this indicator was 21%.
A fifth of students communicate in both Ukrainian and Russian languages during their studies.
There is a difference in the use of Ukrainian during lessons and during breaks by regions: in the west of the country, 74% of children use Ukrainian, in the east – 17%.
Outside of school, with friends and at home, less than 40% of students communicate exclusively in Ukrainian, and a fifth – as Ukrainian , and Russian languages.
Factors influencing the use of language
Children named the habit of communicating in a non-state language (33%) and the language of communication in the family (20%) as the main reasons , which restrain the use of the Ukrainian language in all spheres of life.
About the survey
Data collection lasted from April 25 to May 10, 2024 through an online survey of participants in the educational process. 7,031 students, 18,788 parents/legal representatives and 4,000 teachers took part in the survey.
