The process of increasing the level of cholesterol in the body can develop asymptomatically for a long time, which is why it is often called a “silent killer”.
Cholesterol in a certain amount is necessary for the body to implement a number of functions, assimilation of certain nutrients (for example, fat-soluble vitamins). But its excessive content means that atherosclerotic plaques are formed in the blood arteries and vessels, which would disrupt normal blood flow and blood supply to organs, including the strategically important ones – the brain and heart.
“Plaques formed by cholesterol deposits in the arteries can disintegrate with the formation of clots that can completely block blood circulation, causing the development of a heart attack or stroke,” doctors warn.
Surgeons representing the California University in San Francisco, listed a number of symptoms that can be used to determine an elevated cholesterol level.
- Pain and spasms in places such as the buttocks, hips, calves, feet, which increase during movement and weaken when a person stops.
- The pulse, which should be felt in the lower legs or feet, shows itself weakly, it seems absent.
- Various skin injuries on the legs do not heal for a long time.
- The color of the skin on different parts of the body may become pale or appear blue.
- One leg feels colder compared to the other.
- Toenails lose their healthy appearance, grow very slowly.
- Hair falls out on the lower limbs.
- Erectile dysfunction (impotence) occurs in men. .
Experts recommend to consult a doctor with the appearance of these symptoms. Adults (age 40 and older) are advised to know their cholesterol level regardless of health. A blood test allows you to determine it with the greatest accuracy. Doctors remind us that unhealthy habits contribute to an increase in cholesterol in the blood – first of all, overeating, abuse of harmful foods and alcohol, inactivity and a condescending attitude towards excess weight.
